In this series, we're learning about the various products sold by Screw Products Inc., from their president and CEO, Jim Miller. Today, we’ll be focusing on the function and practical use for cement board screws.

What is a cement board screw?

Cement board screws are specifically designed for cement board, which nowadays is a common building material used behind tile (common spaces in your home that would use cement boards and cement board screws include kitchen floors, countertops, showers, and bathrooms). These screws have extra-sharp points and deep, wide threads in order to help them sit flush against the board and grip the material for maximum strength.

When should cement board screws be used?

Cement board screws are engineered for—and should only be used with—cement boards. Using a cement board screw in, say, drywall (or using a drywall screw in cement boards) could lead to potential damage later down the line because the screws are not compatible with these other materials. Cement board screws will tear up drywall, and drywall screws will deteriorate over time if used in cement boards. Cement board screws, on the other hand, receive a special coating that helps them resist corrosion.

Benefits of a cement board screw

The head of a cement board screw has teeth made to “chew” into cement boards and countersink the head. When properly in place, they lay flush with the top of the cement board, so tile will lay evenly on top for a perfectly level floor or countertop. These screws stay fastened tight even in moist environments because of their corrosion resistant coating.
